What if the Future Does Not Look Like Our Past?

Americans suffer from historical amnesia. We think Leave It to Beaver is a documentary of life in the Fifties. That The Waltons represented family life through the ages. That the disappearance of factory jobs with union wages was the aberration and not the reverse.

I have my doubts about our future because we cannot, will not, honestly face history.

First, I doubt the money people, the Bright People graduating from Wharton and Harvard Business Schools, really know how they make their money. They follow the herd as much as any of us.

Second, economists know the past and do not know the future and none of their models made allowance for Covid and climate change and an European war.

The Bright People thought the world would not change so we could safely off-shore jobs. Meaning profits could still be had. I wonder if we are not approaching a time when all the models created out of what looked like stability were delusions born of hubris.

And those delusions will lead us into extinction.
