Looking For Novella Publishers

Rooting through my bookmarks, I start with Exploring the World of Novella Publishers in the USA.

Of its five publisher, Small Beer Press is out of business. The New Yorker is still publishing, but I know it only takes hard copy submissions; since I cannot afford envelopes for 2 mailings of 5 pages, I cannot afford to send a novella off to The New Yorker. I will file that for future reference. The Atavist operates on submitting pitches; as does Unnamed Press. I have a split headache from what feels like a massive sinus headache, and querying is not seamless enough for my throbbing head. The final entry is Electric Literature, and they are a novella publisher only if the novella tops out at 10,000 words.

Searching Chill Subs for publishers of novellas that are open, and no submissions fees, I found the following:

  1. Twelve House Books: "All prose manuscripts must be at least 40K words. Upper limits are 50K for novels and 100K for short story collections." But they don't expletives, and I've got them
  2.  Cosmographia Books: has on its submissions page information only for The Cosmographia Prize for Spiritual Fiction; "The Cosmographia Prize for Spiritual Fiction seeks full-length manuscripts that offer expansion, delight, spiritual insight, and a transformative reading experience."
  3.  Lowlife Lit Press says nothing about novellas.
  4. Neon Origami says nothing of page limits, or compensation, but it is looking for book length manuscripts. Its Submittable page is less fun while also being more informative: "Both novels and collections are accepted. 25k words minimum, no maximum. Literary fiction only. Collections may contain stories previously published in periodicals and anthologies. Manuscripts must not have been published in their entirety anywhere else." There is a $10.00 reading fee. Since I am down to my last $1, this will be set off to a later date.

Back to my bookmarks.

AGNI: no page limits, a reading fee and a reading period that doesn't open until September 1.

Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern - mail only, but no page restrictions.

Narrative - has a fee, but "NOVELLAS and other long works that are less than book length may run between 15,000 and 40,000 words. For works of this length, please submit the first 15,000 words with a synopsis. (Based on our reading of the first 15,000 words, we will ask to see the complete manuscript if we think the work is suitable for Narrative.)
"

ZYZZYVA is closed for submissions through the summer of 2025.

failbetter: "We publish short stories, self-contained novel excerpts, and novellas. If you’re sending a short story or novel excerpt, send only one at a time. Wait to hear from us before sending another." Nothing about compensation.

Out of the 18 Top Publishers Seeking Novellas in the US, Canada and UK (Writing Tips Oasis), only 6 interested me. World Castle's site returned "ERROR: BAD REQUEST". Urban Farmhouse Press's submissions info eluded me. Holland Park Press seems to have kicked the bucket last year, and Quattro Books seems to have stopped taking submissions in 2019; also, the link from the article would not load: "Zen detected a potential security threat and did not continue to quattrobooks.ca." Nouvella's page showed this: "Hi. We’re working on something. Check back soon :)" Quirk's submission page says: "Authors, if you have representation, we encourage you to have your agent reach out directly to our editors. Unagented submissions should go through the unsolicited submissions inbox, not to editors directly. Please note that our unsolicited submissions inbox is currently closed." And its last publication was in 2021.

I ran out of saved sites and articles. My headache has settled into a dull ache, and I need to work on dinner. So, I end it here.
