Americans like comparisons to the Roman Empire. Thing is the Roman Republic had its empire before there were emperors. What the empire had the Republic lacked was a central authority running things. The Republic had plenty of men of talent - too many, in fact. They had ambition matching sometimes their talents, but often enough their ambition outstripped their talents.
They had a patrician who courted populist mobs. His name was Catiline. He was willing to destroy the Republic to gain power.
