YouTube keeps turning up interviews and I keep listening. Although, I have read only The Sea, and few reviews, I find him a pleasant, intelligent, amusing interviewee. He seems very generous in talking about books and writing, and I think we can learn from him. Give him a chance, regardless of the length of many of these videos.
This is a bit dated, but also includes Banville's agent with insights into an agent's work and the publishing business:
This has two parts:
Arts Lives - John Banville Part 2
That he also writes crime fiction seems a big topic in all the more recent interviews; that is true here, as well as his views on language and writing in general:.
Shop talking with him:
John Banville | The Singularities
An Evening with Authors John Banville and Richard Ford - I wish the volume was more robust; I may have read a bit more of Ford. Interesting that as writers they do not segregate by sex or race or etc.
Newsnight (2007) - The State of the Novel - Martin Amis and John Banville:
This might seem dated, but there is much here that I think remains practical from two very good novelists. Amis is another writer I might have read two novels instead of my having read Banville's one.
Read, you who would be writers!
So, find a Banville novel and see what you learn.
