Happy Fourth of July! Good-Bye Independence Day!

Five men and one woman undid the Constitution of the United States, rendered meaningless everyone who died for American democracy, and have given us a King.

SCOTUS Burns Down Another Guardrail

The biggest legal questions surrounding Trump now concern his possible next round of lawless actions—how unshackled he will be, in short, should he win the presidency again in November.

With Trump running ahead of President Biden, I guess now Americans want a dictator in the Oval Office. Kiss Independence Day goodbye.

A friend sent me this email today:

Our society and our Republic continue to fracture in ways I could never conceive or imagine.  It doesn't seem to bother the media, while anyone I speak with is petrified with fear.  I imagine Vlad is sitting in  a recliner chuckling.  Evacuation plans must be proceeding in Ukraine.  Financial advisors in multiple countries are waiting for BOJ to dump US treasuries and dollars so they can do the same thing which would send interest rates soaring, US stocks tumbling after.  War will find its way to other parts of the world.  Time to cull the herd?!  Dark path ahead! Turn back Dave!

Time to pray

He is not a religious person.

I sent him this reply:

this is why I never voted Republican for President. I did nto trust Reagan with Falwell and Robertson hanging over his shoulder. That is when all this began. The people pissed off at Nixon resigning got back into power with Reagan. Look at John Roberts resume.

Walking to work today, I had this thought. Too many people have spent too many hours watching pro wrestling. They think everything is rigged. The false story is the truth and the truth is whatever somebody is saying at the moment. That more than Fox News has got us where we are today. And you are right, everything could blow up in the next few months.

The conservatives have been the radicals for 40 years.

Just so you know what you are getting with Trump back, take a look at the following.

 Project 2025: blueprint for a far-Right future

Project 2025 A Mandate for Leadership is worth paying attention to. Nigel Farage, Giorgia Meloni, Marine le Pen, Viktor Orban and Trump may not be carbon copies of each other. But the same causes, the same impulses and, often, the same solutions drive them.

Here’s a sample: “Defang and defund woke warriors” (federal civil servants, teachers, unions, even the military) who have infiltrated every American institution. Slash green policies. Resume full-throttle gas and oil extraction. End diversity and inclusion policies. Regulate LGBTQ, transgender and sex education in schools. Seal America’s borders. Withdraw from the IMF and the World Bank.

Trump and his backers, both in and out of government, learnt one big lesson from his first term: governing is time-consuming and not everybody is a pushover. There’s a whole “elite” out there waiting to scupper his best intentions. It’s not so different from Johnson’s “Blob” or Liz Truss’s “deep state”.

The answer, at least in America’s case (say the authors), is simple: reset how the country is governed. Redefine its cardinal doctrine, the separation of powers between the executive, Congress and the judiciary. Make the President first among equals with extraordinary powers.

This is what should keep us awake at night: not the policies, which are debatable, but the urge, which has deep roots, of all parties at either end of the spectrum, to short-circuit democracy with authoritarian fixes.

Inside Project 2025

Project 2025 is candid about its ultimate goal: to reprogram the U.S. administrative state to support and sustain archconservative rule for decades to come. The distinguishing features of this regime would include a far more politicized bureaucracy, immunity against meaningful public or congressional oversight, abusive deployment of agency enforcement capabilities as a tool of political retribution, and aggressive manipulation of federal program implementation in the image of Christian nationalism, white supremacy, and economic inequality.

The flip side of silencing or firing career public servants is to empower extremists and amplify outlier viewpoints—a move  Mandate for Leadership has plenty of ideas about how to accomplish. One of these is simply to point Schedule F and security clearance abuses in the opposite direction. Unburdened by the competitive hiring process, agencies could hire whomever they wanted for career civil service positions. Project 2025 makes clear that unquestioned loyalty to the president, as opposed to professionalism and expertise, is the only real qualification that matters. Similarly, political appointees would have a freer hand to assign security clearances, ensuring loyal voices are heard loud and clear when it comes to conducting intelligence assessments to inform national security decisions.

Happy with that kind of future? Then do not call yourselves conservatives, or patriots, or even Americans.

Otherwise, get registered to vote and keep Trump and all Republicans out of office.
