Just Another Sunday

The Paris Review removed the paywall on Carver's Careful

On Academy of the Heart And Mind, I read Peace of Mind by Susan Cleveland. Inspirational is right.

On Another Chicago Magazine, I read “The Daley School of Jazz” by Bill Harrison. Interesting slice of Chicago jazz history.

Ted Gioia does a wide range of interesting things with his Honest Broker on Substack. The latest is Are There Alternating Cycles of Hot and Cool in American Cultural History? (Part 1 of 2). I admit procrastinating on this one, I have been rather tired and narrow-minded this week, and I suggest you do not copy me on this. I have long now - well, about a decade now - thought economics did no pay enough attention to irrational behavior. Like the law, economics presumes people will act in their rational best interests. Turns out smart people were there before me. For this reason alone, read this piece, and you will learn something new.

Thunderstorm warning for other counties. Tornado watch for Delaware County. A little more and more looking to be on its way. No bike riding today.

When I get my weight down, I want to try this Chocolate puddle pudding with orange and cardamom.

I poked my nose in at Books from Scotland: THE BEST OF SCOTTISH BOOKS; more particularly, its Let the Sun Shine Getting Ready For Summer. Some fun stuff... but work calls.

5:17:

Well, I sent "The Psychotic Ape Pays A Visit" off to the Writers of the Future Contest.

Earlier today, I posted a link to The Guardian's review of Richard Ford's Be Mine. Cleaning out stuff this afternoon, I ran across LitHub's excerpt of the novel

6:47

I have dolled up some canned tuna with spaghetti sauce, and it is slow cooking on the grill.

Which time I am using to clear out my Clipping extension. Three posts added here. These are what I wanted to note, but now do not think need a separate post:

From The Commons: Friday Reads: June 2023 (I found the first novel most interesting, but there are plenty that sounds worth reading - if only there was enough time!)

Five 21st Century Plays Every Screenwriter Should Know - if you like the theater, you should also check these out.

From LitHub: 50 of the Greatest Summer Novels of All Time (some of which I have read and others I would, so check them out before going to the beach.)

Need to check on dinner. 6:55

Well, I needed more charcoal. I finished off dinner in the microwave, and now it is cooling.

Kill Your Darlings just sent me its latest email newsletter, and they have their Books Roundup. I have found their reviews worth reading. Plus, here is a way to see what is going on overseas. From the same source comes Publishing’s Catch 22 on ‘Timely’ and ‘Important’ Books by Seth Robinson. This is its subtitle:

As an aspiring fiction author, I’ve been warned that readers are showing ‘apocalypse fatigue’. As world events blur the lines between realism and what was once the realm of speculative fiction, why aren’t the big issues of our times the ‘next big thing’ in publishing?

I do not see me going anywhere that needs reporting. Nor do I see the time to write anything useful. Maybe continue to clean out my bookmarks.
