Explaining Writing - A Writer's Tool

By accident, I found Writing Explained. It has several different topics.

  1. Difficult Words - the site has a long list of these, which are links to pages explaining the difference between words and providing examples. This looks more than a little useful. Check out, for example, Ahold or A Hold – What’s the Difference?.
  2. How to Start a Blog - looks like the standard issue advice with an emphasis on WordPress.
  3. Style Guides - there is a brief description of the major guides.
  4. Dictionaries - The Writer’s Dictionary (including idioms, literary terms, and grammar), and Spelling Dictionary all seem useful, but I only skimmed them.
  5. Literature Explained – Literary Synopses and Book Summaries - looks like Cliff Notes.

I bookmarked this site for later use. That it is available online is the great thing, but then I have been using online dictionaries rather than my hardbound versions. They go better with copying and pasting. YMMV.
