Joel C introduced me to Halldór Laxness through the novel Independent People (I recommend the novel - the sheer grimness of existence in old Iceland brought to life by Laxness' prose ought not be missed). I wrote about him before here, with quotes from Laxness' Nobel Speech. If ever my PO approves the new laptop, I may get my notes from reading the novel onto this blog.
