Writing: Up North Literary Journal

Up North Literary Journal describes itself as

"At its core, Up North Literary Journal is a web-based literary journal seeking to showcase the very best creative work of emerging and established writers and artists in the Midwest. Our mission is to bring the work of high school students into conversation with the work of experienced writers and artists at any point of their career and see what new discussions, perspectives, and ideas are formed. All in all, we devote at least half of our journal to the work of high school students, while the other half is comprised of writers and artists of all ages and steps in their careers.

The journal publishes twice a year and their submission guidelines are here.

I am not going to submit here but nice to know it exists. I doubt they would welcome a villain like me.  They also do not appear to pay.

All that said, I do like what they wrote here about Midwestern writing:

It’s easy to get caught up in classic portrayals of the Midwest, movies and shows like Fargo, Happy Days, and That 70’s Show, and the list goes on. And while many of these shows are funny, complex, and thrilling, they can often times make it seem like only one experience exists here. Often times, this can disservice many of the everyday experiences in the Midwest, specifically people and communities often already under-represented. At Up North Lit, we are committed to making space for these voices and perspectives.

Sounds like a possible outlet for Indiana writers.

I did sign up for email updates.
