The Civil War, that is.
The federal constitution says that federal law is supreme. The South from the Kentucky-Virginia Resolutions to the Nullification Crisis to Fort Sumter promoted the idea that the states could determine what was constitutional. Appomattox Courthouse and the Fourteenth Amendment put paid to those ideas. Now Texas is doing this:
WASHINGTON — Lawyers for supporters of the Texas abortion law told a federal appeals court Thursday that the state was free to pass its law banning abortion after about six weeks because states can reach their own conclusions about whether abortion if constitutional.
Either these lawyers are idiots, or hypocrites - and there I will stop as I am working on charity as a virtue.
