6 Steps to Becoming a Good Literary Citizen came to me from Writer's Digest. The title caught my curiosity - a literary citizenship? I am out here waiting on my laptop, getting rejections, bothering KH with calls every once in a while, forwarding stuff to him and JC and Paul S, but not feeling myself part of a community. Since coming home I am no longer part if a writer's group. I reached out through the Muncie Craig's List for a local group. Bloomington has one. Another point in favor of going south.
Still, I agree with the WD article:
One of the best ways to build your platform is to become a good literary citizen. This means giving back to the literary community in a meaningful way, making yourself available to other writers as time allows to provide your knowledge and expertise, and championing other people’s successes.
I think this a good idea regardless of marketing. After all I have been through the last 15, 20 years, I find we need give back to our communities or lose ourselves.
Read the article, implementation may be easier in your locale.
