I came late to the young Joan Blondell, and still trying to come to grips with her. Damned good-looking, smart - she makes me think of a female James Cagney. This time I got to think of Barbara Stanwyck's career, but then I did a short bit of research and turned up Joan Blondell – The Ultimate Dame (pre-code.com). She got an Oscar? Never knew it, and never heard of the movie. Bad PR? Smart-mouthed women did not fit into the Hays Code? Mae West didn't.
