John Banville is an Irish writer. I read his novel The Sea while in prison, and I must admit felt the failings of my education. There was both an erudition (Banville is a Trinity College man, if I recall correctly) and a simplicity to his writing. Simplicity that is beautiful. I have seen some of his review for The Guardian since. He is a fellow worth reading.
YouTube turned up a video of him speaking at The West Cork Literary Festival, which I tried listening to. What I could hear (what is it about these videos where their sound tech seems to have been on vacation?) was brilliant. He seems a far more congenial fellow than his CV might indicate. What bits I could hear were brilliant, humorous, and everything but tedious. Hopefully, your sound system is better than mine. I do think there is more to learn here than reached my ears.
