I read Harlan Ellison in law school, after his being recommended to me by another student. He knocked me over - and he terrified me. I read Stephen King's first short story collection by this time and Clive Barker's first Books of Blood. Ellison put both of them to shame, without being a horror writer. His stories have stuck with me far longer than anything by King or Barker. King may have even picked up from Ellison that humans can be the true monsters. Barker, has faded, his interjection of sex into horror was what got him his initial attention, but I know little of his personality. I will assume Barker is like King, not nearly as angry as was Ellison.
Ellison's books were always hard to find. If you see one, snap it up. He is a great short story writer. Albeit, not one that will get noted by mainstream critiques of the short story.
