Writing Sentences

I finally got to Austin Kelon's post on writing sentences. Copy and learn is how I learned to do actual legal pleadings. Law school taught us the concepts, but not how to use them. I had no idea of how to use those concepts and often not a very clear understanding of the concepts, until necissity of real life sent me to the form books. Seeing the actual legal forms which put those concepts to work is where I actually learned civil procedure. I did this somewhat less rigourously when I started writing fiction - I did not copy but I like to think I read closely. Yes, I agree with the idea, so check out the post and the links he has there.

It occurs me that Ralph Ellison's typing up Hemingway is a similar exercise - maybe the ultimate in copying.
