S.A. Crosby is a writer I have heard interviewed and have not yet read. I have read Chester Himes. I read him way back in college. It was one of his Harlem crime stories. Then I read If He Hollers, Let Him Go in prison. Now Crosby has written about Hines and it is the New York Times Book Review, The Crime Novelist Who Was Also a Great American Novelist. Read that piece and then go get one of Hines' books.
I am going to swipe one quote Crosby uses from Hines:
As he says in one of his more famous quotes: “There is an indomitable quality within the human spirit that cannot be destroyed; a face deep within the human personality that is impregnable to all assaults.”
We should all remember that.
