Things have not changed so much since I wrote what I posted as Our Over-Connected World, 7-26-2010. That is what I thought reading The Work is Not Enough by Anne Helen Petersen who publishes Culture Study on Substack.
It took my becoming a failed suicide to understand what Ms. Petersen has learned:
I don’t need to stop taking care of my friends’ kids, or stop running, or stop having dogs, or stop skiing in order to make this all [waves hands wildly] fall into place. I just need to be vigilant about not taking on more work than I can reconcile with the rest of my life. The work matters; the work is important; the work is wonderful. But the work is not enough.
A sensible woman, more so than I ever was. The hardest thing is letting go of what is superfluous to one's life, I made that point in The Monkey and the Fruit. Please pay attention to this.
