Lindsay Hobbs wrote a rather charming essay under the headline of Writing Advice from Shirley Jackson. The tips include:

• THINK YOUR NICHE IS TOO WEIRD? LEAN INTO IT.
• IS THE DAILY GRIND GETTING YOU DOWN? USE IT AS MATERIAL.
• WASTE NOTHING

Ms. Hobbs provides plenty of examples. The last tip is one I did not follow but in the last 11 years has come to believe:

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.

So says Shirley Jackson: “All you have to do—and watch this carefully, please—is keep writing.
