Never Having Been Sure What To Make Of Harper Lee

Let me admit a few things, I never read To Kill A Mockingbird before I went to prison. Yes, I had seen the movie many times over the years.

Entertainment Weekly put To Kill A Mockingbird on its 100 Best Novels of All Time. I do not agree with that, other than as a sentimental reason. If I recall correctly, there was no Saul Bellow on the list.

But I found things in the novel that do not appear in the movie. I cannot recall the character, but he could not appear in a movie made in the early Sixties. It adds a perspective, maybe even a bit of depth, missing from the novel.

Today, I made it through my book review newsletter from The Guardian, and found ‘A glimpse of genius’: what do unpublished stories found in Harper Lee’s apartment tell us about the To Kill a Mockingbird author?.

There is a description of what was found without any evaluation of their worth. It seems to me that Harper Lee's bones are being picked for profit, maybe even something more macabre.

Just go read To Kill A Mockingbird.

Be glad and admire her talent.
