I recall reading Kaiser Wilhelm II thought America would not fight. I recall seeing the same opinion from Hitler and Imperial Japan. Yeah, well, history says differently.
However, I was shocked in the past year to hear the same kind of thinking from a former Air Force Major.
The father of my first fiancée served in Korea. When he enlisted, he lied about his age, and he left the service a sergeant. I never knew what his record was, only that he had been at Chosin Reservoir and had no great respect for Marines. He told me that American soldiers want to get themselves back home and the enemy was in their way home.
No, Americans did not want to go to war, but they being in one, they were going to do the job right.
Why liberal democracies win total wars (The EI Podcast) goes into the issue with more finesse than I have done, give it a listen.
I will also offer my post, a commentary on de Tocqueville: Chapter XXII: Why Democratic Nations Are Naturally Desirous Of Peace, And Democratic Armies Of War 11- 9-2010 (part 1)
