Kurt Vonnegut was the first living Indiana writer I knew of - my Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary Ellen Finholt worked with him at General Electric. Vonnegut maybe our last great novelist (I will go to my grave asserting Michael Martone is our best living short story writer)
