Okay, Thursday Notes - Censorship; Chaplin; Bo Knew the Benefits of Rhythm

I go to the grocery after work.

The bus gets me home by 4 pm.

I spoke with DM on the phone - mainly about politics.

The email and dinner and one blog post have all been attended to.

No writing was even attempted. Security deposit not yet paid.

I hope you were not expecting anything of real excitement - I am not even sure about interest or importance - but I am closing out here with links to some things that caught my eye in the past week.

How Charlie Chaplin was one of the first cancelled celebrities, a book review:

What it all meant, Eyman concludes, is that long before the dismal age of the internet trolls, the attacks by the FBI and a compliant media ensured that “Charlie Chaplin had been cancelled”. The connection between then and now, when “authoritarian politics (has) revved up again in the 21st century – a bitch always threatening to go into heat”, generally remains implicit but is manifest throughout.

Along with its celebration of one of the cinema’s great artists and the love of his life, Charlie Chaplin vs America offers a timely lesson for any culture that allows journalists to behave like predatory gossip columnists, snapping away at the heels of vulnerable celebrities.

Brief lives: The compact art of Lydia Davis (book review)

To find life’s vivid detail among its minutiae is more difficult than it looks. What Davis often achieves – like Hamaguchi Ryusuke – is a rarer feat still: making it look easy.

International museum watch group decries “censorship” at IU in Samia Halaby show cancellation

The International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art Museum Watch condemned the cancellation of several exhibits associated with pro-Palestinian views, including Samia Halaby’s exhibition at IU’s Eskenazi Museum of Art, in a statement Monday.

On Dec. 15, IU canceled an exhibition from Halaby, a renowned Palestinian abstract artist, after it had been planned for three years. Though IU cited security concerns as the reason for cancellation, it has not yet provided information about whether it received a specific, credible threat.

Foggy here, as it has been the past two days. It seems thicker today, but that might be my imagination. Here is the local forecast.

Special Weather Statement issued January 25 at 5:17PM EST by NWS Indianapolis IN

While incoming rainfall is expected to improve visibilities slightly, areas of dense fog, with visibilities of one quarter mile or less at times, will remain throughout tonight, and visibilities may decrease again when rain ends late tonight. Visibilities may fluctuate significantly over short distances. Exercise caution if traveling across central Indiana through the night. Slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and use low beam headlights.

I put the cat out this morning and he has not returned. Maybe he has taken residence elsewhere. At least, I can hope so.

Get rhythm, get happy, and Bo is the one with the rhythm:
