From Migrants from ‘safe countries’ down 70pc after changes to international protection system:
The number of migrants arriving in Ireland from countries deemed safe by the Government has dropped by 70pc.
The Government believes Ireland is no longer seen as a viable destination for economic migrants leaving so-called safe countries because the systems for processing people arriving here have been fast-tracked.
Safe countries of origin are described as being states where there is generally no persecution, no torture or degrading treatment or punishment, and no threat of indiscriminate violence in situations of international or internal armed conflict.
So long as one American political party benefits from scaring people with xenophobia, there will be no such fix in this country.
