Hungarian Literature

 Why Hungarian literature? 

1. Because we need to know what is going on in the wider world. We cannot let us Midwesterners think we are parochial, or allow us to be marginalized, any more than the Hungarians let themselves be segregated from the world of literature.
2. Because when I started reading, trying to fill up the holes in my literary education, I found much that inspired me, opened my eyes to possibilities, charmed me about what was coming out of Central and Eastern Europe.
3. Because in prison I knew a fellow of Hungarian descent who turned me onto Magda Szabo and László Krasznahorkai, and I want other people to read these writers.
4. Because Hungarian Literature Online is a really cool site. In English.
