I Think a Neighbor Died Today

It is 10:38 pm, my eyes are tired, and I want away from this computer.

Up at 6, caught the 7:15 downtown, so I could catch the 7:45 out to the doctor. I have arthritis in my left thumb. They gave me a cortisone shot and it has been a relief. I told the nurse I would almost prefer cancer. Arthritis means old age, and I am a bit vain. I got back around 10 am, after a stop at McClure's They are stocked now with RC Cola.

Coming up Broadway, I had a fire truck, a paramedic vehicle, and three police cars pass me. A mild case of curiosity became a major case when I saw them turn into the motel. It went beyond the bounds when I saw they were turning into my little corner. I go to the far side and there was a bit of excitement going on. What was not clear until later. I think whoever lived 2 doors down died. Cops and paramedics and people looking shocked holding hands over their mouth. Clincher: the paramedics put him in the meat wagon with the blanket over his head, with no haste to get him anywhere.

Then it was 2 hours on email and reading duty.

Thanks to LitHub, I read the short story from Argentina, Cecilia Pavón: The Flawed Concept of Coupledom published on the site of The MIT Reader If you want a category, call it flash fiction, for it is very short. It does not have the feel of a prose poem that I get off flash fiction. It is short, it is elegant, it has a charm.

I also gave a look at The MIT Reader. Looks like a general purpose site – not all literary. And it proves a point I have been trying to make since I get settled in to Fort Dix FCI out in New Jersey. My point being Indiana pops up in the strangest places. Here is another headline from the MIT site:

What Gets Buried in a Small Town: The Toxic Legacy of PCBs in Bloomington

Curling continues to take over the world – just as the globe warms: Jared Allen: from NFL bone-cruncher to Olympic curling hopeful

I ate a small lunch before knuckling down to “Road Tripping.” I finished putting down words around 9 and spent about another 45 doing some light editing.  In between, I talked to the attorney about dad's trust, CC about visiting, Melanie from DIY about what was going on there, and my sister about a few things. I got a pizza for dinner.

That is another day in my life.
