Property tax reform threatens Indiana education. An uneducated, or even an under-educated, citizenry will lead to a downward spiral of Indiana's economy. That is what I got from reading today's Indianapolis Star. I will ask what The Star did not: what does this mean for the pursuit of happiness promised by Indiana's Bill of Rights?
It means no good. It means degrading the lives and aspirations of Hoosiers. It means driving the most ambitious to other states for mere survival. I stayed in Indiana over the objections of my Eastern relatives. I still have enough bullheadedness to think Indiana has great prospects. (Let us ignore the chagrin felt at ignoring the advice of my relatives.) So I want to offer an idea not as a cure-all, but as a help. School corporations survey your teachers to find out how many students there are those who need help in what subjects. Then contact the churches, county bar associations, Rotary Clubs, Mason, Lions Clubs, chambers of Commerce, and all other service organizations. Tell them what is needed and then match students with tutors.
If I were still practicing law, I doubt I would approach the schools and volunteer myself. I was too caught up in making money, making ends meet. Others might be more amenable to volunteering. Others might have the patience to teach.
Let me give you small businessmen and lawyers the best reason for volunteering: your survival depends on future of generations properly educated to get better jobs to pay for your goods/services.
And the schools: take this as but another example of taking a different slant on a long-standing problem.
