Lillian Hellman's Candide

I just finished Lillian Hellman's adaptation of Candide. A rough patch here - Lillian Hellman doing a musical feels like a stretch. Doing Candide feels even more of a stretch to me who thinks there are no characters in the original only philosophical puppets manipulated by Voltaire.

And it seems I am not the only one with qualms:
