Reading The Huffington Post's Senate Negotiators Unveil Bipartisan Border Bill leaves me with this question: What is there in this that makes Republicans go crazy?
The legislation would expand the government’s ability to expel migrants at the border, restrict claims for parole, and significantly increase the standard for those seeking asylum, a system that has long suffered from a lack of resources and backlogs in court. It would also automatically close the border if illegal crossings reach or climb past a certain average daily threshold, with certain humanitarian exemptions.
Because it makes the Democrats unhappy?
Biden’s stance has angered Latino Democrats and the progressive wing of his party, who noted Biden once fiercely opposed Trump’s tough immigration policies and who argued that restrictive border measures wouldn’t solve the crisis.
“The deal includes a new version of a failed Trump-era immigration policy that will cause more chaos at the border, not less,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said in a statement.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said the legislation “throws immigrants under the political bus” and puts “migrant lives in the crosshairs.”
Or is it the Republicans may have to admit they do not really care about fixing the border only about making noise about the border?
'It's Betrayal': Republicans Go Ballistic Over Bipartisan Border Bill They Demanded tries to explain. However, there is little substance, or it seems they are talking about some other bill:
But it wasn’t just rank-and-file Republican Party senators who were quick to denounce the border deal, which was negotiated by their fellow conservative, Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), and praised by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), a member of McConnell’s leadership team, also announced his opposition on Monday.“I can’t support a bill that doesn’t secure the border, provides taxpayer funded lawyers to illegal immigrants and gives billions to radical open borders groups,” Daines, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said on X.
And buries the true reason for Republicans not liking they are getting what they want:
Republicans were the ones who initially demanded concessions from Democrats on tougher border enforcement. The border provisions were supposed to give wary GOP lawmakers political cover to vote for an emergency spending package that includes more aid to Ukraine. Now, with an agreement on the books and Trump driving the reins, Republicans are walking away from two priorities they’ve sought for years: border security in the U.S. and in Ukraine to counter Russian aggression.
Before, Republicans could ostensibly claim they opposed further U.S. assistance to Ukraine without tougher border enforcement. Now, the position of many in the GOP appears to be that they simply oppose aiding Ukraine flat out.
So much for Republican integrity. So much for Republicans looking out for America's best interests. Say hello to the party of Putin and hypocrites.
