War Breeds Stupdity

I'm all for the Ukrainians kicking the Russians back home. Every day Ukraine remains free proves the dangerous stupidity of authoritarian rule. How Americans - hello, Grand Old Party - who are still mostly Protestants - except for the United States Supreme Court - fall in love with, even to the point of drooling over, strongmen insisting on their infallibility.

But I am disappointed by The Guardian's ‘Propaganda literature’: calls to close Mikhail Bulgakov museum in Kyiv. Too bad they do not try to pry Bulgakov away from the Russians; that even with his faults, he is a Ukrainian.

Not that Americans need to feel any great pride. We have done far worst, been far more childishly stupid in our reactions to war. In Palm Sunday, Kurt Vonnegut details how viciously moronic Americans were towards German-Americans during World War One. We are too ashamed still to face up to what we did in WWII, but Korematsu v. U.S. is still there to read.

We can all do better. We should all do better.
