Abortion: About Amending Indiana's Constitution

In Abortion: Michigan to Amend Constitution, I wrote about amending constitutions to preserve women's rights and the right to privacy.

Now the idea comes back to Indiana. Hostettler Calls For A Constitutional Amendment To Protect The Sanctity Of Life In Indiana.

I suppose there is some satisfaction to be had by me in having another recognize the limitations of mere legislation:

“When we return to the Statehouse, I’m ready to take action to further protect life in our state,” Hostettler said. “Unfortunately, any legislation we pass could be undone by future legislative majorities that might not share our pro-life values. It’s imperative we settle this issue once and for all, and protect life for generations to come.”

I do not see how the kind of amendment Mr. Hostettler will likely write will square with Article One, Section I of Indiana's Constitution:

WE DECLARE, That all people are created equal; that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that all power is inherent in the people; and that all free governments are, and of right ought to be, founded on their authority, and instituted for their peace, safety, and well-being. For the advancement of these ends, the people have, at all times, an indefeasible right to alter and reform their government.

(History: As Amended November 6, 1984).

Women are people, right?
